Dr. Jon Kurkjian provides answers to a trio of frequently asked questions about breast augmentation that he commonly hears from patients interested in implant surgery.

Fort Worth, TX — Breast augmentation with implants can often be an excellent option for women seeking to enhance the size, shape, and overall appearance of their breasts, states Fort Worth plastic surgeon Jon Kurkjian, MD. As one of most popular aesthetic surgery options available at his practice, he notes that many patients have a number of similar inquiries regarding different aspects of the procedure, three of which often include:

  • Can I Still Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?
  • Which Implant Placement Provides the Most Natural Results?
  • How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

According to Dr. Kurkjian, the belief that breast implants impede one’s ability to breastfeed is a common misconception. The truth, he says, is if a woman is able to produce milk before she undergoes breast augmentation, she should still be capable of breastfeeding after the procedure – as long as the operation is performed safely and correctly. “However,” he writes in a recent blog post, “it is important to note that approximately 25% of women are unable to produce a sufficient amount of milk for breastfeeding regardless of whether or not they received breast implants.” Unfortunately, he adds, some people are unaware of this statistic prior to breast augmentation, which contributes to the myth about implants and breastfeeding.

In regard to which implant placement provides the most natural-looking results, Dr. Kurkjian notes that the answer will depend on the patient’s unique needs and goals. For example, he explains that individuals who have a sufficient amount of breast skin and tissue may be able to achieve exceptional results when implants are placed above the pectoral muscle, while those who do not have an adequate amount of breast tissue may benefit more from a submuscular placement. Each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages, he says, which is why patients should seek a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss the best option for their particular case.

Concerning implant longevity, Dr. Kurkjian states that a specific timeframe for the lifespan of breast implants cannot be provided since there is no way to guarantee an implant will last a certain number of years before a complication occurs and/or it needs to be exchanged. “Therefore,” he writes in another recent blog post, “it’s important for breast augmentation patients to be able to recognize the right time to exchange and/or upgrade their implants, as well as know how to be proactive about doing so.” This includes identifying subtle changes – such as leaking and/or rippling – that may present over time, and seeking the expertise of a board-certified plastic surgeon should any abnormalities arise.

Ultimately, Dr. Kurkjian strives to ensure each and every breast augmentation patient at his practice is fully educated about all aspects of the procedure, and he encourages women considering breast surgery to ask as many questions as they need in order to feel one hundred percent confident in such a life-changing decision.
