How Do You Get Rid of a Sagging Neck?

The neck region is particularly susceptible to the gradual loss of collagen and elastin and weakening muscles that can accompany the natural aging process. This delicate area tends to lose firmness due to genetics, sun exposure, and certain lifestyle choices, often leading to the common concern of a sagging neck—also known as turkey neck.

Fortunately, there are cosmetic enhancement options available for women and men to address a sagging neck appearance with both surgical and non-surgical procedures. Our board-certified plastic surgeon in Fort Worth, Dr. Jon Kurkjian, is extensively trained in the most advanced facial rejuvenation techniques. He and his team of highly skilled skin care professionals are experienced in a wide range of state-of-the-art treatment options, allowing them to customize each patient’s treatment plan for the best possible results. Below, he explains the most effective ways to get rid of a sagging neck appearance.

Neck Lift Surgery

For individuals with more prominent aesthetic concerns in the neck area and beneath the chin—such as creases and wrinkles, loose or crepey skin, fat pockets, neck bands, or skin folds—neck lift surgery may be the most effective option. Dr. Kurkjian uses a “deep plane” technique to contour and reposition the deep structures of the neck’s musculature to create a smoother, more youthful neck and jawline with longer-lasting results. Depending on the cosmetic concerns and goals of the patient, Dr. Kurkjian may perform a full neck lift or a mini neck lift (also called a short-scar neck lift), which can be determined during an initial consultation and evaluation.

Non-Surgical Neck Treatments

If there are milder signs of aging around the neck region, non-surgical options may be beneficial for a more subtle neck rejuvenation. For example, cosmetic injectables, such as neuromodulators (BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®) and dermal fillers (Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, and Restylane®), can help soften the appearance of vertical neck bands and loose skin, as well as shape the jawline. Alternatively, treatment with non-invasive BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy and the HALO® laser may help to improve skin quality, texture, tone, and fine lines in the neck area by targeting the outer layer of skin and deep tissues with light energy. However, it is important to note that all non-surgical procedures will need follow-up treatments to maintain the results over time versus the longer-lasting outcome of a neck lift procedure.
